Freeman Speech Team Members Earn Medals

The Freeman Speech Team continues to work hard this season with a young, but talented team.  This year’s team has 27 members, with only six upperclassmen leading the team.

The first contest of the season was held on January 21 at Lincoln Southwest High School.  The Lincoln Southwest Silver Talon Speech Meet was a highly competitive meet consisting of over 25 speech teams from all over Nebraska and Missouri. Freeman was the smallest school at this meet.

“With such a young team, this is a great meet to attend so the kids can see a variety of events and learn how a speech meet works. It’s also a great place to gain feedback for the events that are ready to compete,” said head speech coach, Jenny Kastanek.

Next, the team traveled to SCC in Beatrice for the MUDECAS meet. Those placing in finals were senior Sam Pella, fourth in Serious Prose; sophomore Mary Zeman, fifth in Humorous Prose; sophomore Montana Bender, fifth in Serious Prose. Medals were awarded to the top six in each event.

The Freeman Speech Team travelled back to Beatrice for the Big O Invitational Speech Meet on February 4 at Beatrice High School. Sophomore Ashley Parde earned a fifth place medal in Persuasive Speaking. The sophomore OID (Oral Interpretation of Drama) team consisting of Ashley Parde, Tessa Hestermann, Cody Larkins, and Garrett Lenners placed sixth. Additionally, sophomore Miranda Dickinson earned a Top Novice medal in Poetry.

The team continues to work hard to prepare for the remaining competitions this season. The team will travel to the ECNC meet in Mead on Wednesday, February 22, HTRS on Saturday, February 25, and Waverly on Saturday, March 4. . The public is invited to listen to team members perform their selections at Speeches a la Mode which will be held Tuesday, March 7th starting at seven o’clock.  District competition will held Monday, March 13.
