Author deGroat at Freeman We moan and groan when we have to re-write a paper one time. Imagine rewriting twenty times! According to author/illustrator Diane deGroat, that is what happens when she is writing a picture book. deGroat was at Freeman on Thursday, October 16th. She talked to students about the numerous rewrites it takes until a book is the finished project. She also walked the students through the process of putting a book together once it is written. It takes about a year for a book to go through writing and processing before it hits the bookshelves. deGroat is the author and illustrator of the Gilbert books, the possum who experiences the same life lessons our students experience. These books are popular in our classrooms so it was fun to hear how deGroat creates her books. Not only does she write the story, she does the illustrating. She is also the illustrator of the Charlie the Ranch Dog series written by Ree Drummond. She showed pictures of her taxidermy collection that allows her to think in 3-D as she illustrates. She also uses real children as models for her illustrations. deGroat presented three sessions to the elementary, plus visited both preschool sessions, and she had the students totally involved at all times. She even ate lunch with students selected from each grade. Students were selected by their coloring picture in grades K-2 and by their written paragraph in grades 3-6. Funding to bring in Diane deGroat came from the Hevelone Foundation Grant of Beatrice and the Freemans Schools Foundation grant, and the Freeman PTO. We appreciate this funding as it allows us to experience an actual author and illustrator.
