Authors, Books, and Reading

Literature has been a big part of Freeman Elementary in October.  We ended the month of September with a very successful Book Fair, hosted in the Media Center on Grandparents Day.  It was our most successful book fair yet!  Be sure to be on the lookout for some exciting events connected with our spring book fair in February including a school wide event designed for families.

On October 16th, we had a visit from the author, Diane deGroat who traveled all the way from Massachusetts to read to the Freeman students and share her experiences as an author and illustrator.  Ms. deGroat has written many books including her more popular "Gilbert" series.  Students may also recognize her as the illustrator of the famous "Charlie the Dog" books written by Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman.  Ms deGroat spent the day reading to students and sharing pictures of her home studio.  She did an excellent job of sharing about how she creates a book from start to finish.  Seven lucky students were selected by a coloring contest or essay contest to eat lunch with Ms. deGroat and ask her all kinds of questions.

We will look forward to a new author next year at Freeman!

On October 21, students will participate in Read for the Record day.  Classes are partnered up and spend time reading together.  Our minutes that we read at Freeman are then submitted and we will then see how many minutes are read around the country in one day.  Students are encouraged to wear pajamas to school for the day to celebrate.
