Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ premier scholarship program where high school students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year the theme was “Why I’m optimistic about our nation’s future.”

Three Freeman seniors won in the local contest. Claire Richardson was the local winner with Meghan Schellpeper placing second. Both of their five-minute entries went on to the district level. Derek Zimmerman placed third. Each was awarded a cash prize sponsored by The Burrows DeBoer Post #10042. Every senior within the school entered the contest this year with a total of twenty-four entries. The students were judged on originality, content, and delivery.

Meghan went on to take the VFW District event. At the state banquet in Lincoln she was announced as the sixth place recipient.
