Football Team Wins Homecoming Game

Freeman 32, Lourdes CC 28

The Freeman football team hosted Lourdes Central Catholic Knights for their homecoming game.  Freeman was able to get a first half lead, but saw it diminish in the fourth quarter.  Freeman was able to hold off the Knights for a Freeman victory.  The final score of the game was Freeman 32, Lourdes CC 28.

The first quarter found the Falcons scoring on the opening kick-off.  Jacob Buhr with the help of some good blocks returned the kick-off for 79 yards.  The PAT rush failed and that ended up being the only score of the quarter.  The score at the end of the quarter was Freeman 6, Lourdes CC 0.

In the second quarter, Freeman put another touchdown on the board when Buhr caught a 21-yards reception from Isaac Frerichs.  Brendan Glanz kicked the PAT.  The Knights answered with a 55-yard reception with the PAT attempt falling short.  Freeman had the ball with close to three minutes on the clock and was able to score the last touchdown of the half with one second on the game clock.  Derek Veerhusen caught a 29-yard reception from Frerichs.  Glanz successfully kicked the PAT and, the score at halftime was Freeman 20, Lourdes CC 6.

Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter.  Lourdes CC scored on a 6-yard rush and rushed for the PAT.  Freeman then responded with a 22-yard rush from Frerichs.  The PAT pass was incomplete and brought the score for the third quarter to 26, Lourdes CC 14.

Lourdes CC had a solid fourth quarter by outscoring Freeman 14 points to 6.  Freeman’s last score of the quarter was an 8-yard rush from Buhr.  The PAT kick from Glanz was wide right.  Lourdes CC then responded with two touchdowns in a row.  The first score was a 7-yard rush and the PAT attempt failed.  The last score of the game was a 10-yard rush and then rushed in the PAT.  Freeman got the ball back with 5 minutes left of the game clock and was able to run the clock down to 8 seconds before giving the ball back to Lourdes CC.  This gave the Knights enough time for one pass, which was batted down by the Freeman defense.  The finally score of the game was Freeman 32, Lourdes CC 28.

Coach Troxel stated, “It was a really unusual football game.  We had the ball most of the night on offense, but didn’t score on a lot of drives due to penalties or big defensive plays.  We ran close to 100 offensive plays, which is double what we normally run.  The Freeman defense held Lourdes CC to 15-yards rushing and 157 yards receiving, but yet the game ended up being a very close game in the end.   We need to continue to get better each week and finish drives when we are in the red zone.”

Freeman will travel Pawnee City next week with kick-off time at 7:00 PM.
