Freeman Girls' Team Qualifies Several for State Track Meet

The Freeman girls track team finished third in the District C-3 track meet held at Fillmore Central High School on Thursday.  Winning the meet was the 2011 and 2012 defending State Champions of Fillmore Central.  Fillmore finished the meet with 125.5 points.  Lincoln Christian outdistanced the Lady Falcons by 8 points by scoring 103 points to secure their second place finish and the Lady Falcons finished in third with 95.33 points.

It was an emotional day of highs and lows for the Lady Falcons.  The Lady Falcons had a lot of success and managed to qualify eight athletes for the State Track Meet in six individual events and two relays. Individuals qualifying were:  Kylie Trobee in the shot put, Carley Rmmers in the high jump, Marissa Haynes in the 100 meter dash, Taylor Sugden and Marissa Haynes both qualified in the 200 meter dash with a photo finish, Taylor Sugden in the 400 meter run, and Morgan Lenners in the 1600 meter run.  Also qualifying was the 3200 meter relay consisting of Cassidy Mason, Emily Lenners, Taylor Sugden, and Morgan Lenners and the 1600 meter relay team consisting of Cassidy Mason, Mackenzie Ruskamp, Morgan Lenners and Taylor Sugden.

The meet also had a few heart-breaking disappointments for the Lady Falcons.  Jessica Benton fell in the 100 meter hurdles and did not make finals.  In the 300 meter hurdles, Jessica was securely in second place as she was coming into the last hurdle and she clipped it and fell.  The crowd's heart sank as she got back up and finished in fifth place.  Alaina Huls finished the shot put in 3rd place and was exactly 12 inches away from making the trip to Omaha next week.  The 400 meter relay team of Jessica Benton, Mackenzie Ruskamp, Kylie Trobee, and Marissa Haynes were also disappointed as they finished the race in first place and thought they qualified for the State Meet only to find  out they had been disqualified for being out of the exchange zone on one of the handoffs.  While it was disappointing for these individual athletes, their teammates and coaches are very proud of them and their efforts.  It is also with sadness that the track team says goodbye to Anna Harder and Lindsay Hottovy, two Seniors who completed their season on Thursday.  Individual results from the District Track Meet were as follows:

Triple Jump:  6th place, Anna Harder, 30' 8"

High Jump:  1st place, Carley Remmers, 5' 1"; 6th place, Riley Page, 4' 2"

Shot Put:  1st place, Kylie Trobee, 38' 7"; 3rd place, Alaina Huls, 36' 1"

100 Meter Hurdles:  4th place, Mackenzie Ruskamp, 16.8

100 Meter Dash:  2nd place, Marissa Haynes, 12.9

200 Meter Dash:  1st place, Taylor Sugden, 26.7; 2nd place, Marissa Haynes, 26.7

300 Meter Hurdles:  5th place, Jessica Benton, 55.0

400 Meter Dash:  3rd place, Taylor Sugden, 61.9

800 Meter Run:  4th place, Emily Lenners, 2:37.2

1600 Meter Run:  1st place, Morgan Lenners, 5:39.6
