Speechers place 1st at Beatrice Invitational Speech Meet

The Freeman Speech Team had twenty-one members compete in twenty-one events at the Beatrice Invitational Speech Meet on Saturday, February 2. Thirteen partial teams participated in this contest. Freeman brought home the 1st place trophy. Taking 2nd was HTRS followed closely with Beatrice, Auburn, and Conestoga.

Leading the team with first place medals were Celia Timms in Poetry, Blake Lenners in Informative, Jeff Wallman in Persuasive, Jessica Larkins in Extemporaneous, and Johnathan Neil & Hannah Neil in Duet. Providing second place points were Gerrit VanEngen in Entertainment and Shannon Koening, Lindsay Hottovy, Jeff Wallman, Gerrit VanEngen, & Anna Harder in OID. Third place medalists were Courtney Buhr in Informative, Claire Richardson in Serious Prose, and Lindsay Hottovy & Shannon Koenig in Duet. Fourth place finishers were Anna Harder in Persuasive, Meghan Schellpeper in Entertainment, and Jeff Wallman & Anna Harder in Duet. Rounding out the team at sixth were Trevor Klein, Jessica Larkins, Jacob Benton, Hannah Neil, & Scott Adams in OID.

Top novices not placing were recognized and Freeman had three in this category: Matt Ideus in Persuasive, Emily Klein in Humorous Prose, and Katelyn Bohlmeyer.

The team will compete next at Auburn on Saturday, February 9. The team has had an opportunity to match up with some of the district and conference competition.

Each school provides its own judges at invitational meets. Helping out this week were alums of the team: Shelby Koenig and Alex Richardson. Teri Nieveen, a registered judge, also judges many meets. The team members also appreciate the support of the parents who travel to the all-day meets.
